Developers are concerned that the house numbering scheme mandated by Alameda County is violates the ancient Chinese tradition of feng shui and will scare buyers away.
Under a numbering system established by Alameda County in the 1950s, addresses are assigned based on how far the homes are from downtown Oakland. The method puts five digits on almost every mailbox in Hayward and other cities in the county.I'd think the farther away from Oakland the better. The numbers have always been hard to remember. But home developers recently raised concerns they may decrease property values because the odds are greater that an address will carry a combination considered unlucky by feng shui practitioners.

To say nothing of increasing, equal and decreasing house numbers as you drive down the streets.
Indeed...having been to Oakland, I would agree that being as far away from downtown as possible would seem to be good karma, even if it might not make for good feng shui.

Must suck to be the pizza delivery guy in that town!
Posted by: Drew at January 2, 2006 2:07 PMOne thing I do like about driving in DC is the grid system. With few exceptions you can find any address without a map.
Other than that though, DC is best visited via subway, daytime only.
PS: Since when do we allow "religious" beliefs to guide city planning?
Posted by: mikem at January 2, 2006 3:12 PMWe allow it, mikem, if the reasoning is obscure, or the religion is non Judeo-Christian. Why, I have no idea...
Posted by: BobG at January 3, 2006 10:36 AMThey are getting realy weird when they dictate a building by a new age mumbo jumbo thing like FENG SHUI i mean its rediclous whats with those big time croack-pot leaders anyway? Its like these city councils replacing the usial christian prayer with new age pagan cerimonies with persons in macks dacing and covorting through city hall chambers beating drums and chanting in a weird way
