"I still think we're a better football team. They just made the plays in the end." -- USC Quarterback Matt Lienart after losing the National Championship Rose Bowl to the University of Texas.

Couldn't have had anything to do with that terrible call in the second. I don't mind if the team I'm rooting for loses legitimately, but the reffing was horrendous that game.
Posted by: Pasty at January 5, 2006 7:57 AMThe reffing was better in that game than any of the other bowls I have seen all year (and I watched at least 8 complete and another dozen or so partial). Yes, the review booth did blow that one play, but with given the rhythm that they were in, you are kidding yourself if you don't think that Texas was going to score on that drive.
USC lost because at the end of the game they simply could not stop Vince Young. He jogged into the endzone untouched twice in the last 4 minutes of that game. In between runs, he was IIRC perfect passing. USC just did not have the giddyup to contain him.
/didn't really care who won, was slightly pulling for USC
Posted by: Nick Bourbaki at January 5, 2006 10:26 AMHonestly, I thought USC did, all in all, look like a better team. (I was pulling for Texas) I think if they played 3 of 5 or 4 of 7, USC would probably come out on top. However, that's not how it's played. While I'm playing what-if, if there had been 3 more minutes... if USC didn't waste that time out at the end (or the ones earlier) or if... you get the idea. I was pleasantly suprised with the end, but it did seem that USC was the better team, but Young just managed to get it done when needed.
But, man, what a game.
Posted by: Nate at January 5, 2006 2:37 PMIf you can't hold a 12 point lead over the last 6 minutes of the game, you are not better than the other team. Period. This was one terrible comment by a QB who had, up to that moment, not experienced much losing. He better learn from it or his pro teammates, when criticized after a loss are going to forget to make the next block or catch.
Lienart sounded like a loser with this statement.
