You may want to remove some of the breakables before you read this one.
Prosecutors argued that confessed child-rapist Mark Hulett, 34, of Williston deserved at least eight years behind bars for repeatedly raping a littler girl countless times starting when she was seven. After being convicted for raping a 7 year old girl repeatedly over a four year span, Hulett was sentenced to just 60 days. But Judge Edward Cashman disagreed explaining that he no longer believes that punishment works.
"The one message I want to get through is that anger doesn't solve anything. It just corrodes your soul," said Judge Edward Cashman speaking to a packed Burlington courtroom. Most of the on-lookers were related to a young girl who was repeatedly raped by Mark Hulett who was in court to be sentenced.
The sex abuse started when the girl was seven and ended when she was ten. Prosecutors were seeking a sentence of eight to twenty years in prison, in part, as punishment.
[snip]
Judge Cashman. . .revealed that he once handed down stiff sentences when he first got on the bench 25 years ago, but he no longer believes in punishment.
"I discovered it accomplishes nothing of value; it doesn't make anything better; it costs us a lot of money; we create a lot of expectation, and we feed on anger," Cashman explained to the people in the court.

Hopefully (from my mouth to Gods ears) this piece of worthless subhuman shit has about 61 days left in his life.
Oh yeah, and that cunt of a judge too.
Seriously, that judge has to be in big-time danger of being whacked any day now. Perhaps the next judge would honor his wishes and not punish the assassin, too.
Don't be surprised either if the rapist gets brutally beaten and/or killed during that 60 day span and guards don't see a damn thing.
"The one message I want to get through is that anger doesn't solve anything. It just corrodes your soul," said Judge Edward Cashman
Sure, this coming from a man whose soul has obviously already rusted-out.
Posted by: roger at January 6, 2006 8:52 AMThe judge isn't the only official that doesn't get it. "under Department of Corrections classification, Hulett is considered a low-risk for re-offense so he does not qualify for in-prison treatment." What does it take to be considered high-risk???
Posted by: markm at January 6, 2006 9:13 AMTWO ropes, tree, some assembly required.
And nobody saw nuthin'.
That's a RCOB moment, no doubt about it.
Posted by: Kevin Baker at January 6, 2006 10:49 AMThe judge should get 60 years for handing out such a limpwristed punishment
Posted by: sandpiper at January 6, 2006 9:12 PMThat judge needs to step down to then spend the rest of his life "rehabilitating" some of these creeps he feels are redeamable.
Posted by: Lornkanaga at January 7, 2006 10:47 AMI think there is something about this case that the judge relates to and that is the reason for the light sentencing. I have trouble imagining a rational thinker making the same decision he did.
Posted by: Suzi at January 7, 2006 4:51 PMHELL... I was sentenced to 90 days in jail. (Albeit, they were suspended).
But then I SCARED some sheep open carrying an EVIL GUN, so I suppose I deserved it.
Sounds like 7 year old will be the year my children start packing... If that don't work, I will make sure the scumbag isn't bothered with facing even the possibility of 60 days in jail.
It would be nice if simply getting rid of this one judge would make a difference. Sadly, our court system is a joke from the TOP down.
Posted by: FishOrMan at January 9, 2006 3:18 AMAs I have stated elsewhere, this judge needs to be raped for three or four years, then come back and sentence this asshat again. Child rapists deserve death. Nothing less.
Posted by: Florida Bill at January 10, 2006 2:02 PMWe have laws now which control what you can say, and even to a point what you can think, such as "hate crimes" towards certain other citizens.
All of these laws were the result of aggressive activists circumventing the state legislatures and even the national conundrum in federal and state courts.
So unless peole are willing to get active (read: PISSED OFF!!) and damn well take action to actually PROTECT our most vulnerable citizens, then the outrageous actions of "judges" like Cashman are going to become commonplace...
In Iowa, you can kill a kid and get maybe 2 years for it...thanks to the "advocates" preaching women's choice and "justice" issues. 3 women so far have killed their newborns and got off pretty easy.
