"The Democrats know what needs to be done. Again, we're working trying to try push this agenda forward. The other day the oil companies reported the highest profits in the history of the world. I want to take those profits and I want to put them into a strategic energy fund that will begin to fund alternative, smart energy; alternatives and technology that will begin to actually move us toward the direction of independence." -- Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY

When she takes those profits, the "big" oil companies will have no desire to continue operations. Thereby creating yet another "crisis" which only government can fix through complete control of the oil industry. And so it goes.
This story was written years ago... sort of boring for those of us who already know the ending.
Posted by: flipper at February 7, 2007 1:42 PMLovely. Let's encourage the alternative energy efforts by giving them a front seat view of what will happen when they finally become profitable.
Du-uh, I want to invest in that!!
Posted by: mikem at February 7, 2007 4:18 PMWeren't these "temporary profits"? I was under the impression that this money came from the steep increase in oil prices following Hurricane Katrina and other events. They made a lot of money on the oil they already bought, but they'd have to reinvest that money in buying more oil from OPEC due to the high prices. However, oil prices are currently dropping (again), so they might actually get to keep this money. (Or at least the price at the pump seems lower.)
Of course, oil prices may increase tomorrow, and those profits will disappear pretty quickly.
So, basically, these are "dumb luck" profits and not "conspiracy to enslave the working man" profits.
