I've come to realize that the vast wealth and riches that the Empire de Ravenwood has accumulated may allow me to hire a bi-weekly maid service. I haven't decided ya or nay yet, but am fielding offers from several different bonded and insured maid services.
But I'm worried about how to best prepare. I know it sounds stupid, but it seems that you actually have to clean up before the maid service comes. I need to find a home for all the homeless clutter that has accumulated on my dresser, night stand, and various end tables. Also, what do I do about the half dozen guns that are strategically placed around my house. My first thought is to put them away under lock and key. But my bedside gun and under-the-bed attitude adjuster are permanent fixtures. What to do, what to do?
Anyone out there have any suggestions?
The only people I know who have ever been fully satified with housekeepers are those who 1) have full time domestic help around already such as a nanny or 2) my old neighbor who would have these drop dead gorgeous housekeepers come by to a) service the house and b) service him.
In both cases someone was home. Everyone else, eventually, has a problem.
I'd just clean it up myself.
Posted by: countertop at March 12, 2007 5:54 PMNothing better than a regular maid, but I always used referrals. Therefore, they knew I was a gun nut before they took the job. So I never worried about the guns, because there was no chance they would be gone without me knowing who took them.
As far as cleaning up before they get there -- forget it, and leave it to them. They'll do it better than you, and you'll like how they do it. If they don't, then it's un-clean-uppable and you should probably just sweep it all into a bind and burn it.

Posted by: BobG at March 13, 2007 1:04 PMI've always figured the only people who need to know I own guns are my FFL and whomever I'm pointing a loaded one at.
You don't know who the maids know; don't give them information they (or their relatives, friends, etc.) can use to your disadvantage.

When you invite a stranger into your home you are also allowing at least the possibility that everyone the stranger knows will hear about your guns. The maid may innocently or not so innocently let slip to somebody interested in theft that you are a prime target. So how to avoid a problem? Either sequester the weapons into a locked room/closet/safe before the maid arrives, and don't mention their existence, or trust that everyone in her circle of friends (and those people's friends) are honest upstanding citizens.

I have a bi-weekly team of ladies come thru, and I make certain all ordnance is locked up (along with the wife's jewelry box) and out of sight. I'm not sure about the immig. status (actually, I am to be honest) of some of these ladies, but the boss seems ok and comes well recommended. They all know that I speak passable spanish, so they don't get into any "dumbass gringo" talk around me.
The best chuckle I get is when they dust the bookshelves in my office and have to lift and polish the models of INS vehicles that my ICE brother gave me. LA Migra! Aiyeee...
If the maid is of the criminal nature, she would most likely be a petty thief, leaving breaking and entering to a boyfriend or brother...
