"As we slide down the slippery slope, future smoke bans will include cars (where children are present), private homes (where children and/or employees may be present), and eventually outdoors (where smoke is free to roam where anyone might be present)." -- Ravenwood, 11/10/2005
Under a City Council proposal, New York City would prohibit smoking in cars where children are riding, joining the ranks of Arkansas, Louisiana, Puerto Rico, Bangor, Me., and Rockland County, N.Y., where similar legislation has been passed. -- New York Times, 08/15/2007
Wait'll the tax revenues that are derived from cigarette sales drop through the floor.
Just for the record, when I was overseas I was buying cartons of Salems(for mywife) for ~$11.00/carton.
A town here in the East county of San Diego (El Cajon) just passed a ban on smoking in all public places. "...making it unacceptable to light up anywhere one might encounter a nonsmoker." I originally understood the ban to also include private frontyards/backyards, but all the articles I read did not mention that as part of the new ordinance to begin in September. I'm guessing they received too much opposition to the yard part and revised their statutes accordingly. I'd be willing to bet the EC city council revisits the yard thing at a later date, unless a pissed off electorate votes them out of office beforehand. Highly unlikely as that is.
