One of my ideas is gaining traction over at Random Nuclear Strikes. When I buried it in a long boring post about taxes, I was wondering if anyone would even pick up on it. Analog Kid gets a gold star for actually reading through the crap I put on here.
The $500 gun credit would be a toughie.
Besides the fact that (if the UN is correct) there are some 250,000,000 firearms in the country (resulting in $125,000,000,000 in tax credits), we'd have to tell the .gov how many guns we own, and probably type, manufacturer, and serial number in order to get the credit.
That's registration. :-)
You have to think these things through to their logical conclusion, Ravenwood!
Posted by: Kevin Baker at December 19, 2003 8:39 AMIs that how it works for child tax credits? I figured you just list how many you got, not their name, social security number, fingerprints, how tall they are, etc.
I think they would only need that info if you get audited for padding your numbers.
Posted by: Ravenwood at December 19, 2003 9:08 AMFor the child tax credit, I believe you have to give the child's social security number.
Posted by: Kevin Baker at December 19, 2003 9:50 AMGet your guns social security numbers.
Posted by: Ron Hardin at December 19, 2003 12:09 PMso if i were to buy a $100 gun, i would get $500 in a tax credit? and if i bought (hypothetically) ten of these guns, i would get $5,000?
at least with the child tax credit, you're (theoretically) spending more per year on the child than the credit you get back.

I disagree. Making babies is inherently free. Once you have the baby, it's easy to get the state to raise it for you AND get a child tax credit.
A gun is a gun, so the Earned Income Gun Credit should be the same, no matter what your gun costs. You probably don't want to buy all 10 at once, though, because some states red flag purchases like that.
Posted by: Ravenwood at December 19, 2003 2:19 PMSorry it took me so long to thank you RW, I was at the range since early this morning.
RW's right about the kids. They're free. Guns cost money to own, maintain and use.
As for the telling the government about how many you have, we can put a limit of 10 guns (just like the limit on how little or how much you can make to qualify for EIC). If you tell the government that you have more than that, you're an idiot.
And remember folks, this will only apply to your property taxes. You are providing for the common defense of your local area, so no cut on the fed taxes.
